Q) What is Septoplasty?
A) Septoplasty is the functional reconstruction of the nasal airway in order to allow better airflow in patients suffering from nasal airway obstruction.

Q) Is the septum the only thing causing nasal airflow obstruction?
A) The sensation of a 'blocked nasal passage' may be due to a variety of conditions. A deviated septum, or enlarged turbinates, or collapse of the external nasal valve, or narrowing of the nasal internal valve, or functional disorders of the inner lining or mucosa or the nose, or scar tissue from previous surgery can all give rise to turbulent airflow or resistance to airflow and create the symptom of nasal obstruction. As a true Rhinoplasty surgeon with a background in Otolaryngology (ENT), Dr. Naderi is highly skilled and able to identify and correct such problems. Many local ENT surgeons refer the 'tough' cases to Dr. Naderi due to his ability and holistic approach enabling him to address all of the issues contributing to the problem.

Q) Are these surgeries covered by insurance?
A) Usually yes. A letter may need to be dictated to your insurance company in certain situations to get their approval of benefits. We will guide you through the process and make things as simple as possible for you.

Q) Can functional surgery such as these be combined with cosmetic nasal surgery or a Rhinoplasty?
A) Yes. It is wise to do these surgeries at the same time for several reasons. Whether insurance does or does not pay for a portion of your surgery, you will save money by combining the surgeries due to the savings on Anesthesia and Hospital fees. More importantly, the cartilage taken from the septum to straighten the septum can be used for grafts during the Rhinoplasty. If you decide on an Aesthetic Rhinoplasty in the future after you have already had a septoplasty, then the cartilage from the septum may not be available and your surgeon may need to obtain cartilage from your ears or ribs for grafts. Lastly, you can take one week to recover for both procedures instead of having to take time off of work and go through it twice.

A) rebuilding of the nose may be necessary due to severe damage to the nose from previous poor Rhinoplasty results, but more commonly from trauma, dog bites, or skin cancer.

Q) How does Dr. Naderi reconstruct the nose?
A) It depends on the type of injury and the extent of tissue loss. Simple local flaps, to small composite grafts, to more complex staged local flaps may be necessary. Dr. Naderi has helped countless patients who have been referred to him from Mohs surgeons (special type of Dermatologists) for reconstruction of near total nasal defects. These procedures are often staged and 2 to 4 or more surgeries may be necessary until the final result in obtained.

Q) Does smoking affect results of nasal surgery?
A) Smoking causes restriction of blood flow to the skin. It delays healing and may facilitate infections. However, the only situation which smoking is an absolute contraindication is if a 'flap' is necessary. Flaps have a very high risk of 'not taking' in smokers.

Q) Does Dr. Naderi perform Sinus surgery as well?
A) Dr. Naderi does not practice general Otolaryngology but he works very closely with excellent local ENT surgeons. If sinus disease is present then he will refer you to these surgeons for evaluation. If sinus surgery is necessary then he will combine your procedure with your ENT surgeon's sinus surgery so you can have both procedures done at the same time for your safety and convenience.
