Ethnic rhinoplasty is a customizable cosmetic nose surgery that caters to patients of various cultural groups. Differentiations exist between ethnic noses and Caucasian noses, and among noses belonging to patients of various ethnicities. Ethnic noses commonly have extra fatty, fibrous material situated in the tip, though some of the nasal cartilage in the support of the nose is weak in comparison with Caucasian noses. Changes to an ethnic nose must be robust so they can be seen from an exterior view of the face. Dr. Naderi has extensive training in nasal anatomy, and knows how to tailor each surgery to meet a patient’s specific needs.
African American Noses
Individuals of African American descent tend to have thicker skin on the nose. The tips are commonly rounded and the nostrils are wide set. Typically, bridge height is low. The nose often supports other curvaceous features of the face, including full lips, though patients may request refinement of the nose. Sometimes this requires the surgeon to build up the bridge and tip of the nose with material (often times harvested from the patient) to enhance the nose from both frontal and side views.
Asian noses are very similar to those of African Americans with a lower bridge, wider nasal base, and thicker skin, though Asian noses tend to match the petite structures of the face. In many patients, the inner nostrils are partially or fully apparent when seen straight on. This is often due to an upturned nasal tip that may be corrected during rhinoplasty. The doctor may also be tasked with moving the nostrils inward toward the nose, while building up the height of the nose and shaping a more defining nasal tip. While African Americans commonly ask that the nose be made smaller, Asian patients are more likely to ask for an increase in the prominence of the structure.
Hispanic noses can vary greatly as the people who make up this ethnic group are found on different continents. The structure of a nose is thought to be determined by the originating group’s geographic location, evolved to provide the best humidifying, warming, and oxygen-delivering breaths to each individual. Hispanic noses can also have thicker skin, rounded and widely set nostrils, as well as a structure that sits closer to the face. Because Hispanic noses are not always projected away from the face at a sharp angle, this can be addressed during rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty surgeon, Dr. Naderi can explain to patients ideal aesthetic proportions as well as limitations to each nose surgery.
Middle Eastern Noses
Rhinoplasty is not only a top plastic surgery in the United States, but it is also wildly popular in the Middle East. The conservative culture and weather leaves many people covering their bodies from head to toe with only their faces exposed, which may play a role in the mid-face focus. People of Middle Eastern descent tend to have very prominent noses, with dorsal humps, and a downturned tip. The lips may be slightly shadowed by the feature, and the eyes appear smaller prior to rhinoplasty as well. Cosmetic nose surgery creates harmony of the face, promoting balance among the features.
Traditionally, Caucasian noses tend to vary greatly, though there are some general similarities of this facial feature. The nose is larger, more structured than noses of other ethnicities, and can be wide throughout the bridge. The angle at which the nose projects away from the face is often more severe. A dorsal hump may be present, requiring osteotomies, or nasal bone fractures. When a hump is removed, it can leave an open roof deformity in the nose. This initial anatomical change can be likened to a three dimensional triangle losing one of its pointed sides, whereas this feature must be replaced. Other changes to the nose during Caucasian rhinoplasty and ethnic rhinoplasty can be discussed in detail during a doctor-patient consultation with Dr. Naderi.
