There are two surgical approaches for addressing a nose that is not harmonious with one’s facial features.
To make a larger nose proportional with the face, reduction rhinoplasty is performed. Augmentation rhinoplasty enlarges the nose to provide facial harmony. Surgeons can alter just specific parts of the nose or the entire nose. When it comes to resizing, the right method achieves the results that provide the appearance of balance.
Reduction and Augmentation
Reduction rhinoplasty is performed when the cartilage and bones of the nose are removed and rearranged. Even when the nose is significantly reduced, the skin is not altered, it is sutured back into place. It will then naturally contract to fit the new structure of the nose.
Augmentation rhinoplasty can involve materials taken from other parts of the body, like bone grafts from the ribs or cartilage from the ears. Or it can utilize synthetic materials such as Teflon. The skin is spread over the new nasal structure. It is then sutured into place, where like after a reduction, it will also naturally contract to fit the nose.
Refinement Rhinoplasty and the Tip of the Nose
The main concern of a large number of rhinoplasty patients is the tip of the nose. It can be too bulbous or too pointy. The tip can point up or down too much, or it can even be too straight. All these changes that involve reshaping the tip of the nose fall under the category of refinement rhinoplasty.
Because it gives your facial plastic surgeon access to the full area around the tip an open rhinoplasty approach is usually used. Just as with any rhinoplasty performed by Dr. Naderi the specific corrections needed for your nasal tip will be planned during and after your consultation, well in advance of surgery.
Reduction, Augmentation, and Refinement in Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Ethnic rhinoplasty becomes more refined as surgeons understand more about the differences in the structure and characteristics of the face among different ethnic groups. The main objective in ethnic rhinoplasty is to make the desired changes to the structure of the nose while honoring the patient’s heritage.
All ethnicities have unique nasal characteristics that are specific to their ancestry. Just as with any rhinoplasty procedure, performing surgery on these patients involves tailoring it specifically to suit their individual needs. Facial plastic surgeons are developing their techniques and perfecting their skills as more and more patients from all backgrounds seek out rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty.
