It takes a long time to heal from rhinoplasty surgery. Some patients are lucky enough to have a shorter healing time than others, but it usually takes several months to a year for most patients to completely recover. There are things that patients can do to boost their recovery. Some of them seem pretty obvious, but others may surprise you!
Patients should avoid smoking in the weeks before or after surgery. Nicotine acts as a vasoconstrictor, limiting the amount of blood that passes through the vessels, especially the smaller ones. The skin in the nose has a lot of small blood vessels that carry oxygen and other nutrients that are vital to the healing process. By limiting the amount of blood that reaches the nose, patients can not only delay their recovery, but they can also run the risk of necrosis.
Take Care of Your Skin
Your doctor will have specific recommendations based on your skin type, but you should keep your skin clean, healthy and protected. That means developing a regular skin care routine and sticking with it. Use moisturizer to keep your skin soft and pliable. Wash your face regularly to keep your pores clear and open. Use sunscreen every day to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays.
You should also be mindful of what is in the products you use on your face. Check the ingredients in your makeup and skin care products with your doctor to be sure that nothing will cause problems with your surgery. Your doctor may recommend that you stop using certain products in the couple weeks prior to surgery.
A healthy diet will promote an overall wellness to your body. The goal is for you to be in the best possible shape prior to your surgery, and eating well is a big part of that. After surgery, foods with certain nutrients can help promote the healing process. Protein, for example, helps repair damaged tissues and decreases inflammation. Vitamin C also repairs connective tissue and works as an antioxidant. Vitamins A and D promote bone development and are linked overall to a shorter recovery time.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments
Oxygen is critical in recovery because your cells use oxygen to repair themselves. When your cells repair, your tissues repair. The more oxygen that reaches your cells through the blood, the better your recovery will be. Hyperbaric oxygen treatments after surgery will increase the level of oxygen in a patient’s blood and boost the recovery.
Follow the Instructions
This is by far the most important thing a patient can do to promote their recovery. The doctor will provide patients with a full set of post-surgery care instructions, including a list of dos and don’ts. Things like cold compress usage, foods to eat, how to sleep, and things to avoid are all on those instructions. If you follow them to the best of your ability, you will make your recovery easier and quicker than if you ignore them.
